Hi folks, for those of you who follow the club on the club web site, Twitter and Facebook you may have noted that there was a report of a pollution incident / fish kill on Saturday past at the lower end of the river. It was reported to the NIEA pollution Hotline. They carried out a full inspection of the river on Sunday morning as the incident was reported late on Saturday night and it was getting dark. Other agencies were also present including NIW. It would appear that the fish kill was very localised and restricted to downstream of the culvert at Cherryvalley. No fish were killed upstream of this and were freely rising yesterday when I walked the river. There had been a report of some form of effluent coming from the culvert. To make sure it was not caused by slurry coming from the Ballygowan Road Tributary which enters the river at Park Way Eddie Donly and I kick sampled the tributary yesterday and it was in good order with plenty of invertebrate life present. Thankfully as stated this has been a very small fish kill. However it shows how we need to remain vigilant and report any pollution incidents as soon as we become aware of them.
